Really didn't have much bearing, but how much was the beginning speeding? Didn't seem too bad until his stupidity got the best of him passing in a no passing zone going too fast.

Just had to explain to my housemates why I just yelled "Ah! Holy shit!"
But this is an example of...well, a couple of things, but I'm going to focus on "target fixation" - he rode straight at where he didn't want to go. This same phenomenon explains why a guy will be riding on an open road and wind up hitting the only tree in sight...
